MATH CENTER
When comparing our math students with other industrialized nations' math students, we are not the leader. For our nation to stay competitive in the technology, health and science fields, our schools must turn out strong math minds with a willingness to apply this knowledge to the betterment of future generations. Older girls score consistently below older boys in standardized math tests. Is this because boys are genetically pre-disposed to numbers, patterns, and formulas more than girls?
What are the answers to excellent math education? The pendulum continues to swing in this field. Rote memorization vs discovery method; textbook math vs real world application; long hand computation vs calculators; higher levels of math only for the top math performers vs exposing all students to abstract concepts, even the early grades.
Maybe the answer lies in an inclusive approach that personalizes instruction to meet the unique learning styles and needs of the student. When math embraces both rote memory and application; when girls are equally hard wired to pursue math as are their boy counterparts; when all students are drilled in not only arithmetic but are also taught algebra and geometry with hands-on/high interest instruction; when school math winners are cheered just as loudly as the quarterbacks and high jumpers -- then we can begin to see higher scores, more mathematicians, and more scientists in industry and in schools from elementary levels to universities.
The Learning Lab provides tutoring and math programs that can interrupt the downward spiral of poor math skills and lack of interest in mastering mathematics. Nothing succeeds like success. So when students start to make better grades in math and experience success and new self-images, then that is only the beginning of developing strong math minds and solutions to tomorrow's problems.
With tutoring from basic math through calculus, students receive the support they need to face the subject with resilience.
