DYSLEXIA

Dyslexia is a learning disability in which students experience difficulties with language skills. These may include receptive, expressive, oral, or written language. Problems most evident in school aged children include reading, spelling, and writing. Dyslexia is not due to low intelligence, a desire to learn, or behavior problems.

The assessment for dyslexia includes the following components:

  • Developmental, academic, and family history
  • Cognitive evaluations
  • Phonological processing
  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading tests that evaluate decoding, word identification, comprehension, and oral reading
  • Spelling
  • Reading and writing fluency

Results of a dyslexia evaluation are reviewed with parents (of a child) or with an adult, and recommendations for treatment are provided as necessary.
