While each client’s needs may be different, the following is provided as a guideline on how our assessment process works: (The process can be lengthened or shortened depending on your needs and desires.)
ü Parent interview
The psychologist on the assessment team will meet with parents on the first day of testing to better understand parental concerns, developmental issues, and the purpose for testing. This interview typically takes between 30-45 minutes.
ü Parent and teachers questionnaires
Parents are given questionnaires to complete at home that provide a more detailed description of the child’s history, strengths, and challenges. This information is important for the evaluation team to rule out certain issues and clarify primary needs. Also, parents are given surveys and questionnaires for the child’s teacher(s) to complete. This is optional, but strongly recommended in order to provide feedback on the child’s classroom behavior and performance.
ü One or two testing sessions with psychologist and educational diagnosticians
Typically, assessment takes place in two separate sessions on different days (for Psycho-educational Evaluations) but on the same day for shorter evaluation (e.g. ADHD, Educational Assessment).
ü An interpretation session with parents to review test results and make recommendations
Approximately 2-3 weeks after testing is completed and all parent and teacher forms have been turned in, the psychologist has a face-to-face conference to review test results. A comprehensive written report is part of the feedback session, which typically takes 1 hour.
ü A school visit (if requested) to review test results
Sometimes parents and or the child’s school request a school meeting to review test results. The Learning Lab psychologist is typically the person who will attend this meeting.
ü Follow-up session with the child when appropriate and upon request
Depending upon age and need, a brief follow-up session is offered to the child in order to provide feedback on text results.
